Know Who You Really Are
As a teen, it’s easy to focus on your looks, the clothes you wear, the people you hang out with, the music you like, and even dating. Some focus heavily on sports or driving the coolest car. All these can distract us from our true identity, which is a child of God.
It’s easy to see ourselves as what others say about us or how they react to us. But the important thing to remember is that when you know who you are (the Bible describes us and how we talk and act), then it is easier to be who we are in public.
The second book of Corinthians, chapter 1, verse 22 says that we are identified as God’s property because He put a deposit of eternal life inside of us called the Holy Spirit. Basically, through Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, we are qualified to become a child of God. Then when God’s Holy Spirit lives in us, we become His property. We belong to Him and so we represent Him to others. It’s like if we were on a football team, we wear a uniform with certain colors and there’s a name on the jersey of the team along with, perhaps, a logo of that team.
We are a member of God’s team, so to say. Except it goes much deeper. We are His child.
We have a responsibility to uphold the family name (Jesus) when we are in our schools, at the mall, or even with friends and family. When you know whose you are, you’ll know who you are. You walk, talk, and act like a representative of that family.
Except you can do it boldly and with power because of the Holy Spirit that lives in you. Stories like Moses being afraid to talk in front of people are a reminder that God told him, “Who made your mouth?” It’s kind of a sarcastic response, but if you think about it, when you’re God’s child, you have His spiritual blood flowing through you and if Jesus could speak boldly about His Father, so can you.
Jesus reminds us the importance of not being ashamed to talk about him in the book of Matthew, chapter 10, verse 32. He lays it out pretty easily that if you are ashamed to talk about him before people, Jesus won’t talk about you before God, the Father. So it kind of makes a big point of us realizing that our relationship with God does depend on our willingness to be bold and not ashamed of God before other people.
