Letting Go
How many times have you felt anxiety over things outside of your control? We often get so caught up worrying about what’s next in our lives, careers, and families that the weight of the future can get very heavy.
I’ll let you in on a truth that is so freeing: That heavy weight is one you were never made to carry.
We were made to keep company with God, so that we can “learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:30 MSG). We were made to cast all our anxieties on Him, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). We were made to trust in the Lord with all our hearts, not leaning on our own understanding, but instead submitting to His will in all things so that He is the one directing our paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Nowhere in the Scriptures does God ask us to figure out the next right steps for our lives on our own. He called Abraham and Sarah out of their home country to an unknown place so that He could establish His people in the land He had promised to them—they didn’t know where they were going or what they were going to do there. Similarly, He calls us to step into unknowns with Him, with the promise that “the One who called you is completely dependable. If He said it, He’ll do it!” (1 Thessalonians 5:24 MSG).
Having a relationship with God requires openness: open hands, and an open heart. We need to keep our ears open to what He has to say, and our mind open to what He asks us to do. We don’t need to know the details of the future to fully trust God with it and obediently take each step He places before us.
God isn’t keeping secrets—the bigger picture has been right in front of us the whole time, and this is it: “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 NIV). So simple, yet so wonderful. What great love, what perfect hope we have because we do not have to carry the future—we need only trust and obey the One who does!
May we lean into the freedom found in the arms that carry the heavy weight for us as we let go of the things that weigh us down. He is trustworthy. He is faithful. He is good.
