Daily Bible Reading – January 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Unity in Christ JesusSample
January 16
Introduction
In today’s reading, Paul continues to discuss his relationship with the church at Corinth. In response to the church’s demand that he present letters of recommendation as proof of his apostleship, Paul tells them that they are the letter written with the Spirit of God and written on the hearts of Paul and his companions. Paul also discusses Moses, whose face shone with God’s glory. Yet, he wore a veil over his face, following God’s command. In contrast, followers of Christ receive the opportunity to reflect God’s glory.
Scripture Reading
2 Corinthians 3:1-18
Today’s Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 3:6b
The written law brings death, but the Spirit gives life.
Reflect
In verse 6, what does Paul say about the new covenant? (See also Jeremiah 31:31-34.) In reflecting on this verse, what does “serving the new covenant” mean to you? Reread verses 15-16. When Paul refers to a veil covering the minds of people who read the Law of Moses, he suggests the people of Israel did not understand the Law’s true purpose. Paul says this covering can only be removed when people interpret the Law by faith in Jesus as the Christ. What does this passage mean for people today?
Pray
Loving God, thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Where your Spirit is present, there is indeed freedom. May I serve you and reflect your glory by the power of your transforming, life-giving Spirit. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
2 Corinthians 4:1-15: The apostle Paul describes the spiritual treasure that followers of Christ possess.
