Body Image God's Way

DAY 7 OF 7

There's More to ME than My Body

For years I believed that one specific thing superseded all aspects of my significance in the world around me: The size of my body.

From the time I was a little girl I was bullied about my weight, and this made me believe with everything in me that I would never matter unless I appeased the expectations that others had about my body.

We live in a world where this is the norm. We care about the external. A lot. We care about people’s bodies, their social media feeds, their family compositions, their new hair color, their economic status, and anything else that gives us false reason to determine their overall worth and value as a person.

But the truth is that there is so much more to us than meets the eye. Each of us is intricately made, with gifts, abilities, and a unique way of embracing life. And I believe that at our core, we long for people to see far beyond surface level. We want to be understood and seen for who we truly are.

I’m refreshed and relieved to discover that the Lord doesn’t see things the way we see them.

While others reduce us to our outward appearance, God looks at the heart. How beautiful to be known and understood by a Savior who loves us and calls us good.

It’s easy to be consumed by this whole body image thing. It’s hard to unlearn the lies we once believed about our bodies. But it’s comforting to know that there is so much more to us than the bodies we live in.

Our bodies are good. They’re important. We’re thankful for them.

But there is more to me than my body. And there is more to you than yours.

In our attempt to think like He thinks and love like He loves, we can shift our eyes a bit. We can resist the urge to focus on every little aspect of our bodies and instead lean into the unique person we were crafted to be.

I have news, my friend. The greatest things we accomplish in this life will not be the changes we make to the bodies we live in. As much of a fuss as people make over a weight-loss story, that’s not the impact we’re here on this earth to make in the lives of others. God is not bothered by the things we’re hung up about concerning our bodies.

“People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

My friend, your body is good. Right now. And there is so much more to you than your body. You are known. You are loved. And you have so much to offer to the world around you.
