Debunking the Myths of Christmas

DAY 5 OF 5

What Christmas Is Not?

Christmas is not just about buying and giving gifts. Neither is it a holiday to be with family, friends, and loved ones. Christmas is not about giving gifts, but about receiving the greatest Gift.

The real meaning of Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus—God's ultimate gift of love to the world to save us from our sin.

Today, in our materialistic-saturated culture, Christmas is often made to be more about "what I get" rather than about "what God gave us."

Christmas is really about a big present that God gave the world about 2000 years ago - Jesus!

One of the most famous Bible verses, John 3:16, says: 'God loved the world so much, that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not be lost but have eternal life.'.

Wouldn’t it be crazy if we celebrated the birth of a baby without the baby being present at the celebrations? That is what most of the celebrations during Christmas is all about. People forget that Jesus is the real reason for the season of Christmas.

For a lot of people, Christmas is about parties and cakes and good food. But it is important that in the midst of the celebration, we do not forget that the Jesus who was born as a baby in the manger is soon to come back as a King and Judge.

If we have responded to Him and accepted Him as our Saviour and Lord, we have the invitation to join in the celebration of the marriage supper.

In Revelation 19:9, we read, “Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

Have you responded to the wedding invitation? Will you accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus?

So Christmas is not about party and celebrations, but making sure you will be part of the wedding supper of the Lamb.

For the people of the world who do not know Jesus, Christmas is about Father Christmas or secret Santa. But the true celebration of Christmas is giving thanks and worshipping the Father who sent the Son as an expression of His love for us.

God is your creator, but He wants to have a relationship with you and be your Father and that is why He sent His Son into this world.

But beware! God is not automatically the Father of everyone. He is the Father of those who believe in Jesus. The gospel of John says: “To all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Have you accepted the Lord Jesus as the Lord of your life?

May this season be a time of true celebration as you get to know Jesus in a real personal and intimate way.

Quote: The true celebration of Christmas is when we ponder afresh the grace of God who became human, entered history through a virgin's womb, and brought redemption to the world. - David Jeremiah

Prayer: Lord, help me in all my celebrations not to miss out on my celebration of you and your love for me. Help me to share with others the reason for my celebrations during this season. Amen

Day 4

About this Plan

Debunking the Myths of Christmas

A myth is a traditional story or a widely held but false belief or idea. Was Jesus born on December 25? Were there three kings who visited Jesus? Did the shepherds and the wise men come together to worship Jesus in the manger as is often shown in nativity plays? In this five-day devotional, find answers to these questions and get to know the truth about Christmas.
