Parenting 101: Lessons From Jesus' Earthly Parents

DAY 2 OF 3

But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19 (KJV)

Mary was a reflective parent. She kept the words spoken about Jesus in her heart. To ponder means to meditate, reflect, study, or consider. Her reflectivity or meditation on the Words spoken about Jesus empowered her to raise him in the way he should go.

I believe Mary’s reflectivity equipped her to raise Jesus. Perhaps, it also made submission easier for Jesus. The Bible says Jesus submitted to his parents (Luke 2:51).

If we truly want to train up our little ones in the way they should go, we must be reflective parents—emotionally and spiritually.

Spiritually reflective parents meditate on God's Word about their children, speak God's truth over their children, and allow God's Word to guide their parenting practices.

I like to meditate on Isaiah 54:13 and declare the scripture over my children. Isaiah 54:13(KJV): And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

There are many scriptures you can hold in mind as you raise your little ones. Search them out like hidden treasures.

Emotionally reflective parents are mindful of their children’s emotional capacity and needs. Ephesians 6:4 (KJV) says, "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." In other words, be mindful of your child’s emotions and spiritual growth.

Reflective parents do not primarily focus on their children’s physical development; they also prioritize emotional and spiritual development.

About this Plan

Parenting 101: Lessons From Jesus' Earthly Parents

Regarding Jesus, Luke 2:51 (NLT) says, "Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart." Joseph and Mary were responsible for parenting Jesus. They modeled how to train up a child in the way he should go. In this plan, Temi Michael-O shares lessons from Joseph and Mary's journey to parenthood.
