Fighting to ListenSample

A Sheep with Ears
There is no better way to discover the truth than listening to God. When we listen, we quiet what we already know to make room for what we might discover.
Humans are crowded with wickedness. The flesh is not a reform candidate. It needs to be weeded out—replaced. We do this by planting the Word of God in our hearts, minds, and souls.
We spend far too much of our lives trying to cover our weaknesses rather than naming and replacing them. There is wickedness in each of us. When we expose and identify the rot within, we get a chance to change, an opportunity to make different choices. (1 John 1:9)
Listening is a risk. It asks us to step away from ourselves, to open up to others. We risk our wickedness being exposed, and our enemy will take the opportunity to call us out. Our job as sheep is to only listen to our Shepherd’s voice. He laid His life down for us 2,000 years ago and still gives us abundant life today.
The Bible tells us the first step in listening to God is to listen to one another. It teaches us to set ourselves aside. When we do that, we’re then able to listen to God truly.
Listening to God helps expose our blind spots. It shines a light on the parts of us that do not look like Jesus. Confessing those newfound sights to God allows us to replace counterproductive thoughts and behaviors with those more like His.

About this Plan

Everyone in the modern world is fighting to be heard, but few are fighting to hear. Listening is an exercise in humility. It opens avenues for learning, and it allows us to participate in things bigger than ourselves. This four-part series explores what the Bible has to say about listening and how fighting to hear might be the very thing we need to implement to transform our lives.
