Thrive: The Five Pillars of Fruitful RelationshipsSample
Clarity is Kind
Communication is a multifaceted word. If you asked a group of ten people what it means, you’d get ten different answers. For the purposes of healthy friendships, we are leaning on this definition: the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings. Communication is the second pillar because it is the primary tool we use to effectively articulate and engage in our friendships.
Part of the difficulty with communication is that there are so many different styles and approaches. Our perspective, upbringing, and past experiences all influence how we listen and communicate. Can you recall a time when you experienced a breakdown in communication with a friend? This is why, in friendships, it’s important to learn how to best communicate and listen to others. Clear communication helps ensure intent and understanding are not lost. It provides a common ground for all parties to successfully meet and engage in dialogue.
Keep in Mind:
- Clear communication does not mean we have to adopt the same style and approach as others.
- It’s okay to communicate differently as long as our approach is grounded in truth and love.
- Communication that is rooted in truth and love allows us to operate with integrity, respect and honor in every conversation.
The best example we have of a clear communicator is Jesus. Whether using a parable to teach the disciples or speaking candidly to the Pharisees, Jesus used the power of truth and love to communicate clearly. Every conversation was grounded in one central message, the gospel.
If you’re struggling to communicate your ideas or feelings, think about the most important message you want to convey. Practice sharing your thoughts in truth and love with a close friend and ask for their feedback.
Pray: Lord thank you for offering a blueprint through Jesus on what it looks like to communicate truthfully and lovingly. Guide my tongue to share my thoughts and feelings gently but with conviction. Thank you for helping me know what to say and when and how to say it in every conversation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflect: Communication can be easy or difficult depending on the circumstance and people involved. We can be proactive by having a plan for navigating difficult conversations. When do you find it difficult to communicate? What is one thing you can do to prepare for those moments?
