Becoming Stronger Through Discipline
Discipline, while challenging, is something that can be developed. We have to first make the decision to do what is beneficial despite our feelings. For example, you can have discipline with your eating habits, your workout routine, the cleanliness of your home, and intentional time with God. It also shows in your punctuality, commitment to your task, or raising your children. Discipline means behaving in a certain way to obtain specific results. You may notice that you naturally have more discipline in some areas versus others. Thankfully, discipline in any area is something that can be achieved.
In M. Scott Peck’s book, The Road Less Traveled, he introduces the idea of delaying gratification. Peck explains this as the “process of scheduling the pain and pleasure of life in such a way as to enhance the pleasure by meeting and experiencing the pain first and getting it over with.” Basically, it’s about doing the things you may not want to do first so that the things you do enjoy are enhanced and appreciated more fully. Delayed gratification can also be applied to discipline. The Bible says in Hebrews 12:11, “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Discipline can be difficult to obtain at times, but Scripture explains that what is yielded from discipline is far greater than the inconvenience.
By being disciplined, we are able to see rewards. It can be hard when you are trying to be disciplined to spend quality time with God and in His Word, working out, or trying to complete a new home project. But the hard work of creating time to spend with God brings everything you need to succeed in life: guidance, wisdom, love, and rest. The discipline of working out can develop a strong mind and body so that you can do the things God has called you to do. Choosing to complete the new home project can create a pleasant and relaxing space for your family and for those to come who need a listening ear. Discipline goes back to living the life God is calling us to live. It can bring changes and discoveries that you won’t regret. Trust that the discipline it takes to abide in God’s Word and listen to the Holy Spirit will result in good fruit in your life. The growing pains of discipline are temporary, but the good work God will do is everlasting.
