Glorious!

DAY 5 OF 5

A lightning bolt

There is a story in the book 100 Bible Verses that Made America. It happened in Andersonville, Georgia, on August 16th, 1864. In the Civil War, they would capture enemy soldiers and put them into prisoner of war camps. The Confederate army had a camp with 33,000 Union soldiers held captive. They had a little stream in the camp. With all of the waste, soon the stream became filthy and toxic. No one could drink from it.

So, the captive soldiers joined together. One of them acted as a chaplain. He said, “Fellows, I was reading that when Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod, water came out abundantly. We have to pray that God provides water. If we don’t get a miraculous provision of water, we are all going to die.”

They began to pray together that night, the next morning, and the next night. They continued praying for several days. Then, the chaplain said this: “Anytime you wake up in the night, just pray, ‘God, bring the water.’ We are going to pray again tomorrow.” They just kept praying and praying. All of a sudden, black clouds started rolling in. Crashes of thunder broke over their heads. Flashes of lightning swirled around them. The air was charged with electricity. As a mighty deluge swept through the clearing west of the prison, they felt as if a million buckets of water were being poured out at once. Then a prisoner started to yell, ‘A spring! A spring!’ During the storm, a lightning bolt struck, releasing an underground spring which brought an endless supply of water to the prisoners.

They were desperate because they were going through a very difficult time. They turned to God and said, “God, bring the water.” God not only sent a deluge of rain, but opened a spring.

God has a lightning bolt for each of us. In the midst of difficult times that we are going through personally, in our state, nationally, or in business, whatever it is, God has a lightning bolt. If we will turn to Him, He will strike the ground, a spring will pop up, and we will just begin to drink the blessing and the encouragement that is there.
