DAY 20 OF 33

God’s Word is a Treasure

Read: “The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb” (Psalm 19:9-10).

Think: One of the great promises from Scripture is that God’s words are a treasure. God wants us to treasure and delight in His Word. Psalm 19:9-10 declares, “The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.”

The image of the Bible, painted for us by the Psalmist, is one of grand human affection. The words chosen to display the proper understanding of how we are to view God’s Word are not weak; they do not connote a lukewarm affection. Instead the words chosen convey the utmost affection. God’s Word is to be more desired than any wealth or any sweetness to the tongue. It is not to be obligingly read but delighted in, to come bounding toward with a sense of joy over the privilege to read the very words of God to us and a promise from the Lord that these words are worthy of our desire!

To delight and treasure Scripture is to simply delight and treasure God Himself. To delight and treasure Scripture is to prefer God and His Word over anything else the world paints as desirable for the purpose of your life; it is to reclaim from the outset that God has created you with a greater purpose than that which the world purports your purpose to be. Simply put, we delight in Scripture because we meet the Lord there in His Word.

Apply: Do you treasure God’s Word? Perhaps our affections for His words are too little. Instead, when we contemplate that God meets us in His Word, we realize we aren’t just reading words, but hearing from the mouth of God. Ought that to stir a treasuring and delighting in our hearts?

Pray: Father, cause our hearts and minds today to be swept up by the sweetness and value of your Word. Cause us to read it and study it and chew on it all for the purpose of knowing you more. May we love your Word and treasure it as we treasure you. Amen.
