What if it's true?

DAY 12 OF 47

SUNDAY (Rest, Catch Up, and Next Week's Overview)

All of this week's verses are repeated again today in case you missed any of them.

Four questions to engage with each day:

What stood out to me in today’s passage?

What does it mean or tell me about Jesus?

What does it say to me about how I view myself?

What choice is God placing before me today in response?

Week 3 Overview (John 6:22 – 8:59)

The Debate over Jesus’ Identity

In this week’s passage from John, we pick up with the public’s reaction to the feeding of the 5,000 by the Sea of Galilee. The crowds were literally chasing Jesus down! Then, in chapter 7, Jesus goes south to Jerusalem for the annual Feast of Booths (also called The Feast of Tabernacles).

As you read this week, pay attention to the debate that is raging over who Jesus is. Over and over throughout these passages, you will see people questioning Jesus’ identity, either to his face or behind his back. In contrast to the people’s questions about who Jesus is, look for the claims that Jesus makes about himself. In particular, watch for the five “I am” statements that Jesus makes throughout our readings this week:

  • I am the bread of life
  • I am the source of living water
  • I am the light of the world
  • I am the Son of Man
  • I Am

As you reflect on the debate surrounding Jesus’ identity this week, it’s also important to turn the debate inward. Who do you say Jesus is? And which of the “I am” statements will God bring to the front of your mind this week? Listen for his voice as you read.

Day 11Day 13

About this Plan

What if it's true?

Does God exist? Two thousand years ago, an eyewitness named John saw the miracles, the crucifixion, and the resurrection of a man he concluded was the Son of God. John recorded what he saw as evidence, so future generations could reach the same conclusion. So, what if Jesus really is the Son of God? Take time during Lent to read John's account and ask yourself, "What if it's true?"
