When Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a colt, the people praised Him. Their praises were cries for deliverance from oppressors. What they shouted was a quote from Psalm 118. Psalm 118 is one of the Hallel Psalms, songs sung during the Passover celebration to remind God’s people of their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Hosanna comes from the Hebrew word yasha which means to be liberated, saved, or delivered.
The people recognized Jesus as their Savior, but they did not fully understand His purpose. They believed Jesus would overthrow their oppressors and save them from harm. They expected Him to take over as king of Israel. They wanted political freedom like they received when God delivered them from slavery to the Egyptians.
Though the crowd turned on Him only days later, it did not thwart His purposes. Jesus did establish a new kingdom. He did bring freedom from oppression. Through His death and resurrection He saved us from slavery to sin. When Jesus returns, He will establish His kingdom on earth. We can shout “Hosanna!” today, for He has given us freedom!
Lord Jesus, You are the One, true Savior. I praise You for the work You have done to bring me freedom from sin. Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Amen!

The Gospel of Mark is a powerful account of the life of Jesus. It displays the character of Jesus on every page, from His willingness to suffer and serve to His power and deity miraculously displayed. With every scene the author asks, “Where is your faith?” As we read and study the Gospel of Mark we can’t help but answer this important question.
