Foggy Roads: Trusting God With What we Don't Know

When I started my new job, the hefty commute had me wake up at about 5:00 AM to arrive at work at 7:00 AM. If it wasn’t hard enough to get out of bed, I had an hour in the car to drive the monotonous scenic route of the Delaware Valley. One morning, I remember the fog was so heavy. The fog was so thick that I could only see about two feet in front of me. I slowed the car down in order to maintain control. In driving school, when I was younger, I remember my brother gave me a tip that I would use for the rest of my driving life. “When you can’t see in front of you, use the line as your guide. Even if you can’t see in front of you if you use the line you will never drift off the road.”  Here I was, eyes still heavy with sleep, following the line for my dear life so that I would know what direction to go.

God sometimes puts us in situations where we cannot see what is in front of us. Luckily in His word, God gave us a “line” to follow so that we will not stumble. Proverbs 3:5-6 states that you should trust the Lord with all your heart. What exactly does that mean? How is trust actually defined? Trust can be synonymic with the words confidence, faith, reliance, and belief. Trust is full reliance and dependence on something else. It can be for numerous things, but usually, trust is based on a promise of something to be fulfilled—even if one is not 100% sure how that promise will take place. 

Trust is putting all faith in God to handle a situation although you don’t know all the answers. Trust is finding peace in not knowing all the answers and relinquishing all authority of a situation to Christ. Trust is the hope that faith thrives upon. In looking at the metaphor of driving to a destination, God oftentimes lets us know, even if it is vague, what the end of the story will be. God will give us a bird’s eye view sometimes of where he wants you to be, but he might not give you all the details.

Why doesn’t God answer all your questions? God is all about the journey. We live in a society where fast answers are the norm. God is all about taking his children through a journey in order to develop them.  Also, God doesn’t answer all your questions because if he did, you would have no need to strengthen your faith, self-control, trust, and other fruits of the spirit. Ultimately, God needs HIS name to be praised. Because of this, he doesn’t answer all of your questions so that you can properly develop into the person God has so much purposed you to be.

The key is even though you can’t see in front of you, God gives you a line to follow and this is His word. All we have to do is follow Him and trust Him that that “line” will take us to our destination. Trust God to the extent that even if we look around and see nothing, that we know that God is directing us to a place where he needs us to be.

Trusting in God is fully contingent upon letting go of what you thought you knew without knowing what will happen. It is the process of learning how to be okay with unanswered questions and the embodiment of realizing that whatever happens, whether you wanted it to happen or not if you are in God’s perfect will, it is much better than anything you could have planned for yourself. Trust is blind but so necessary in order for us to experience true peace and joy unspeakable.
