Helper
God created Eve for Adam and said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I’ll make him a helper, a companion.” Through your marriage, you are to build a companionship with your spouse. Let me share with you a few of my favorite definitions for the word “companion” in the Webster Dictionary: Comrade, one that accompanies another. One that keeps company with another. One that is closely connected.
You are not just anybody to your husband. You were created to be connected to him. In Genesis, it says that God created Eve and Adam and together they became like one person. You are one flesh with your husband. Marriage has seasons, but in all seasons, you are to walk alongside and help each other out. He is your person and you are his.
Society wants to tell us what our duties are for the roles we have in life. Years ago, society believed the wife should stay home to do the cleaning and cooking while the husband went off to work. Now there’s a different message: equality. Women are fulfilling callings outside of their home. No matter what society says, the message that the Word of God gives to marriages is one of togetherness. I have found it useful to ask my husband, “How can I help?”
Imagine you are building a house with your husband. I do not know much about building, but I do know it requires hard work. Maybe your partner is better with drawing up blueprints and you are better with the labor part, or your husband is great at laying the bricks and you provide the perfect materials for your house. Whatever it is, both of you have God-given gifts that are vital to building a life together.
Your husband needs your help and companionship. Your help could be contributing financially because two incomes can be helpful. Maybe you are in a “baby season” and right now, you need to help by staying home to care for the little ones while your hubby goes to work. Value the role you have been entrusted. You are not less of a helper for staying home. You are not better for earning a higher salary. You are meant to help build a beautiful life together.
A proverb says, “A wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.” Pray for wisdom so that you can continue to help build a purposeful life with your husband. Togetherness is key.
