DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: What Went Wrong?

The Fall

What Went Wrong?

Considering our world today, it's obvious perfect peace didn't last. Turmoil, war, sickness, troubles—we each have our share. What went wrong?

It started when a fallen angel (Isaiah 14:12-15) named Satan grew jealous of God and determined to ruin the perfection of creation. Satan took the form of a serpent and enticed Adam and Eve to rebel against God's one rule. Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan to question God's goodness and intention toward them. In disobedience, Adam and Eve ate the fruit deciding that they, not God, would determine right and wrong (Genesis 3:1-6).

Peace unraveled by their rebellious choice, ushering in sin and death, which still plagues us today. The consequences of their actions were devastating! Like a virus, sin entered into all of creation (Romans 3:23). Sin, suffering, and pain were passed down from generation to generation; all of creation was distorted from its original design (Romans 8:20-21).

If we're honest, we are very much like Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12). We all rebel against our Heavenly Father. Just think of the grudges we've held, the lies we've told, the thoughts we'd never dare say aloud, the actions that haunt us. An honest glance into our own hearts reveals the truth: We are all guilty (Romans 3:10, 19). Our hearts are heavy with fear, guilt, and shame. Our bodies are weary with sickness, disease, and death. Earth is afflicted with storms, calamities, and disasters. Even worse, sin has separated us from God, causing a permanent divide—a miserable separation called hell (Revelation 20:15).

The fallout of sin has been catastrophic. It's inescapable, with no way to fix it, leaving us all to wonder, is there any hope? Tomorrow we'll will explore that question in chapter three of God's Story.
