Experiencing God's Power and Presence

DAY 8 OF 10

When You Need Joy

Jesus wanted his disciples to be full of joy (John 15:11). Nehemiah told a tearful group of returned exiles that the joy of the Lord was their strength (Neh. 8:10). Paul filled one of his letters with joyful words and told his readers to rejoice in the Lord always (Phil. 4:4). David said fullness of joy is found in God’s presence (Psalm 16:11). And Moses asked God to satisfy his people with unfailing love so they could sing for joy and be glad all their days (Psalm 90:14). According to Scripture, our joy is a big deal to God.

Joy is evidence that God is at work in our lives. Our emotional responses to God vary at times, and we don’t always feel the joy he provides for us. But when we consistently acknowledge his work, embrace his promises, and receive his forgiveness, joy begins to bubble up—even in the midst of adverse and confusing circumstances.

God’s presence and power in our lives is always directed at producing joy, at least ultimately. When we experience the joy of the Lord, our circumstances may not change, but our perspective on them is radically altered. Instead of being inundated with problems, we begin to view problems through God’s grace and power.

Over the years, I’ve learned to ask myself whether I’m experiencing the joy of the Lord. It’s not a foolproof method, but this diagnostic question helps me discern the degree to which I am allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and direct my life. When the Christian life feels like a series of oughts and shoulds, I know something in my heart needs attention.

I believe deep, honest, intimate, and regular seasons of prayer are the key to maintaining our experience of God’s joy. I don’t mean prayer on the run, while driving in the car or drinking a cup of coffee. I mean prayer where you get real, open up, and talk to God. You pour out your heart until it’s empty. That’s when God speaks and his love comes in. The reality of his promises to be your dwelling place and surround you with favor sinks in. His arms surround you. And your heart, once again, begins to fill with joy.

About this Plan

Experiencing God's Power and Presence

Where is God when you’re hurting? How can you experience him when you’re in trouble? How does he turn confusion or fear into clarity and peace? Many of the psalms begin in crisis and end with a testimony of God’s presence, power, and provision. By learning their truths and following their example, we can have the same kind of testimony.
