Love God Greatly: Jesus Our EverythingSample
The warning passages in Hebrews have built up to the warning against apostacy in Hebrews 6:4-8. The author of Hebrews warned readers not to fall away from their faith by turning from God. Our salvation is secure in Christ because it depends on His work, not our own. However, the author of Hebrews wanted to remind his audience of the importance of a heart committed to God. We are to be aware that our sinful nature can cause us to drift away from God, but ultimately, our salvation rests in Him.
After this warning, we find an encouraging word to end this section of the book. Believers in Christ are exhorted to demonstrate eagerness in our faith until the fulfillment of our hope. The fulfillment of our hope is not in the receipt of blessing from God, but rather, in the salvation we receive and eternal life with Christ.
We can receive this fulfillment of our hope because of the one in whom we place our hope: Jesus Christ. In the same way that we must not be lazy in our thinking but must press on to maturity, our actions must also imitate the faith we profess. Through faith in Christ and His return and patience through suffering, we will inherit the eternal glory Christ has promised us.
Lord Jesus, I am so thankful my salvation does not depend on my own works. Help me believe that I am secure in my salvation because of what You have done, not because of anything I have done or will do. You alone are Lord of my salvation. Help me have faith and patience as I await the fulfillment of my hope. Amen.
