From Panic to Praise: A 5-Day Devotional From the Psalms

DAY 4 OF 5

When Anxiety Cripples, Praise Brings Stability

A few years ago, my husband and I were vacationing in Costa Rica. As we were climbing some rocks one morning, my foot slipped and I broke my ankle. Not exactly what I had planned.

During uncertain times, we can feel like we’re slipping emotionally. Anxiety is threatening. We feel as though we’re free falling. Questions like, “What if?” and “What then?” cripple our thinking and leave us emotionally exhausted. The psalmist knew this place as well. In the midst of his uncertain times, he also wrestled with questions. He wondered, “Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me?” (Psalm 94:16). However, after he questions, he shifts his thinking to praise, writing, “But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge” (Psalm 94:22).

Here’s the thing, anxiety and praise can’t co-exist. As a person created in the image of God, you have been given power over your thoughts. In other words, you can choose where your thoughts will focus. When you shift your thoughts from the problems you are facing to the problem solver, God Himself brings peace to your soul. His comfort is what will bring you joy. Even in the darkest moments of your life, He quiets the anxiety in your soul and brings comfort. How might He comfort you? He might bring a verse or worship song to your mind reminding you of His love. He might bring an encouraging word from a friend. He might calm your heart by reminding you of His love. As you faithfully redirect your thoughts to God, you can feel reassured, He will bring consolation to your soul.

Selah – Pause and Reflect: What are some tangible methods you can use to redirect your thoughts towards God when you feel anxious? Hint: turn on worship music and allow the words to prompt your praise.

Pray

Lord, at times, I confess I feel crippled by anxiety. I praise you that you have created me in your image and that you give me the power to direct my thoughts. Thank you that as I shift my focus from my fears to your character, you will bring comfort and calm to my soul. I praise you that you will faithfully support me as I continually turn my thoughts to you. I exalt you lord God, my rock in whom I take refuge.
