DAY 40 OF 42

David’s Wives are Captured & Saul Dies

Questions to consider:

  1. What does this passage teach you about God?
  2. What does this teach you about humanity and the world?
  3. David had so much taken from him, in what must have felt like the blink of an eye, yet he ran to God first. How do you think you would react if something terrible happened? Why?
  4. Instead of being angry at the men who were unable to follow him, David showed grace and generosity toward them with their spoils of war. Some of his men tried to punish the men who stayed behind. Do you ever feel yourself being stingy with what you feel you have “earned”? How could you be more generous with the gifts God has given you today?
  5. Saul, the first king of Israel and the #1 bad guy in David’s life, died. Not only that, but his body was then mounted on a Philistine city wall. How do you respond when something terrible happens to someone you don’t like? How should you respond?

Let’s Pray:

Father God, help me to have a heart that hurts for others when terrible things happen regardless of whether I like them. Help me never to find joy in the pain of others but to mourn with them and love them as you love them.

About this Plan

1 Samuel

Picture this: a nation chosen by God; a prophet from an unlikely background to help show God’s ways to His people; a king whose fear and unfaithfulness bring disaster; and a man after God’s own heart who changed the nation of Israel forever. This is a story of God’s reign and rule, Israel’s choices and consequences, and two men’s different responses to God.
