1 Samuel

DAY 27 OF 42

Devotional:

This past week we were introduced to a new character: David! In chapters 15-16, Saul is rejected as king for his disobedience, and God chooses David to be the new king of Israel. If you were to choose a King, what qualities would you want them to have?

In chapter 16, God sent Samuel to find the new king amongst a large family of boys. As Samuel is meeting the sons, we can see the standard he thought would be best for the king. He was looking for someone who was like Saul: old, strong, and handsome. But God quickly tells Samuel the standard He was looking for in a king. The start of David’s story shows us that God is concerned with the state of our hearts, not just appearances. We continue to see David’s character revealed through his defense of Israel against Goliath, his friendship with Jonathan, and how he is obedient to Saul even when Saul tries to kill him out of jealousy. David is an example to us of what God is looking for in those who believe in Him. Someone who honors God’s will and glory above his own.

Looking back at the Word

  1. What is God looking for when choosing the next king? Why do you think that is God’s standard?
  2. Describe the different character traits of David. (1 Sam. 16:14-23, 1 Sam. 17:31-37, & 1 Sam. 18:8-16). How are David and Saul different from one another?

Questions to Consider:

  1. Take time to pray about whose standards you are trying to live up to. Are you trying to live up to the standards of your friends, teachers, or parents? Confess these things to the Lord and ask him to help you refocus your heart on Him.
  2. Whom could you tell about what you have learned this week? Make a plan to do this.

Let’s Pray:

Father, remind me today that you set the standard for my life. Remind me it is not how I look or what I do but what is going on in my heart towards you. I confess anything that is distracting me from you, help me to be focused on you today.

About this Plan

1 Samuel

Picture this: a nation chosen by God; a prophet from an unlikely background to help show God’s ways to His people; a king whose fear and unfaithfulness bring disaster; and a man after God’s own heart who changed the nation of Israel forever. This is a story of God’s reign and rule, Israel’s choices and consequences, and two men’s different responses to God.
