UNPACK this...Fear and WorrySample
Thrive on Pressure
Houston Texans’ quarterback, Deshaun Watson, had many impressive performances during the 2019 NFL season.
During their playoff game against the Bills, Watson had the play of the day when he appeared to be sacked but escaped to complete a pass that went 34 yards to set up the game-winning field goal in overtime.
Following the game, Watson’s high school offensive coordinator said, “…He just thrives on pressure. Most guys can’t take it or shrink away in that moment. He just thrives. And that’s what he’s made for.'”
Head coach Bill O’Brien commented, “Anybody that’s been around him for a long time knows he doesn’t have any fear.”
Known as a winner and overcomer, Watson has proven to be at his best when the pressure heats up. Would we be able to say the same about ourselves? How do we respond when work gets stressful and our home life becomes overwhelming and the defense comes in to take us down?
This life is a constant battle and the challenges and pressures are always going to be there, so we need to learn how to effectively deal with them…and thrive amid the intensity.
Thankfully, as followers of Jesus, God’s power within us gives us peace, understanding, perspective, and strength. Instead of being overwhelmed, we can ask Him to help us through our stressful situations.
The writer of Psalm 118:5-6 declares, “Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
The pressure-filled moments for Deshaun Watson bring out his best, reveal his character, and give him a chance to shine. Today, as an alternative to being filled with fear, let’s embrace our own pressure-filled moments as great opportunities to thrive and trust in God.
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I confess that I allow the pressures of life to get the best of me and pray You would change my perspective. Help me rely on You to get me through the challenges instead of letting the stress bring me down. Teach me to thrive on pressure and please provide the strength I need. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
