Growing in HopeSample
The Holy Spirit is proof you are God’s child.
We already discussed the fact that the Holy Spirit lives inside of us as followers of Jesus. The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 8:16 that the Holy Spirit gives proof we are God’s children. Picture yourself being in a court room and having to testify as to whether you are a child of God. You might or might not convince the jury that you are.
As you are aware, you have done many wrong things. You have evil thoughts. You do things you should not do like lie, steal, etc. But, you have a witness who, despite your sins, will testify that you are a child of God. Now picture the Holy Spirit taking the witness stand to testify on your behalf. He is the most trustworthy person who could ever testify on your behalf. He is God! When the judge asks the Holy Spirit if you are a child of God, He answers, “YES!” Yes, you are a child of God!
Another picture of the Holy Spirit proving that you are a child of God is His work of sealing you. In the ancient days, the king had a special ring called a signet ring. When he would send an important letter, he would pour wax to seal the letter and then imprint the hot wax with his ring, sealing the document. Everyone who saw the king’s seal knew that the letter came from him.
The Holy Spirit seals you(Ephesians 1:13, 4:30) in the same way. His presence in you is proof that you belong to God, the King of all kings! This seal is both proof that you belong to Him and a promise that you will spend eternity in Heaven with Him. You are His possession, sealed and kept safe forever.
“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.” Ephesians 1:13
It is this proof and sealing of the Holy Spirit that gives us hope today (Romans 15:13). You can trust the Holy Spirit and thank God that you are His child!
Today as you pray, thank the Holy Spirit for testifying that you are a child of God and thank God for sealing you with His Holy Spirit.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for testifying for me that I am a child of God! Thank You, God, for living in me and calling me Your own. Help me know You more. Teach me Your Truth so that I can obey You! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
