Lesson Six: Building Process 3 - Growing in the Life of Intercession
Spiritual Warfare in Intercession
Spiritual warfare happens not only over individual lives, but over entire societies as well. The enemy works through social structures that influence the way people think and live. It has been identified that there are seven of them in every human society and they are like mountains for us to conquer.
The Battle for the Seven Mountains of Influence in Society
- Government – Seat of authority that upholds or protects the welfare of people for a peaceful and orderly society
- Economics/Business – Manages and generates material resources for society
- Education – Molds and equips citizens in the areas of character, knowledge, and skills to make them productive members of society
- Family – the basic structure for human development where people establish their core identity and values
- Religion – the expression of man’s search for meaning and purpose in life
- Media/Entertainment – transmitter/molder of values and information in society
- Culture – defines and expresses the collective values and identity of a society
Suggested teps in warfare intercession for a mountain of influence
For the following steps, we will pray for the government as an example
- Identify a particular lie of Satan that is prevailing in this mountain of influence. Satan’s lie to government leaders: “Having power/authority makes you invincible. You can do whatever you want. Nobody can touch or stop you.”
- Recall Scripture passages that declare the truth that this lie has distorted or suppressed. In this example, the following passages accomplish this. Psalm 2:10,11 – Psalm 9:6-9 Daniel 2:20-22. The truth from God’s Word for all government leaders: Government is delegated authority under God, who is the King of kings. He is enthroned forever, and rules with righteousness and justice. Nothing is hidden from Him. He demands to be served with fear and trembling. He has the power to judge those who abuse or misuse their authority by removing them from their position.
- Verbally declare: Rebuke the lie and verbally declare the truth with these Scripture passages to the forces of darkness in the spiritual realm. Then take authority in the name of Jesus and the blood that He shed on the cross that paid for the spiritual freedom of people, demanding Satan to remove the spirit of blindness that keeps the unbelievers from turning to the truth. Intercede for the conviction of the truth from the Spirit to take the place of the lie in the hearts and minds of people in this sector.
- Identify the structural evils: What structural evils have been established in society as a result of this lie? In our example, one would be the evil of political patronage. People maintain unholy alliances and take advantage of their political power to get things done without regard of God’s will. Another would be graft and corruption. They abuse their power to satisfy their lust for money.
- Confess: Confess the sins that are being practiced within these structural evils. Pray for God’s intervention. Pray for exposure and disruption. Pray for brokenness and repentance. Pray for God’s mercy and forgiveness in behalf of the guilty.
- Identify and pray for influential people/leaders (by name) in this particular sector – that they will encounter God and bow down to Him as Lord and Savior. Pray for God’s righteousness and will be established in their lives.
- Claim the redemption of this particular sector for God’s purpose and glory.
Note: These suggested steps can be modified to apply to praying for individuals, churches, and other groups. Effective intercession is to be sustained until God’s answer breaks through. You can also conduct your "warfare intercession" on site like praying inside a government building, or across a particular center of entertainment.
