Living Lessons on Setting the MindSample

Living Lessons on Setting the Mind

DAY 2 OF 7

Let’s look closely at the word “according” in these verses in Romans.  “Agreeing” is another meaning of “according.” We could also substitute the word “focusing.” Flesh is very self-centered, worldly, materialistic, sneaky, and un-teachable. When we focus on the flesh, our bodies, the material world, or what we think is the right thing to do, death is the result. Death takes many forms besides the physical. Death can be the consequences of bad choices or the loss of valued relationships.

The opposite of death is life and peace. Life satisfies and brings joy, even in difficult circumstances. When we focus on the Spirit, it’s easier to think of others and their needs and be willing to listen when we need correction. Peace reigns when our focus is on the things of the Spirit.

As Paul continues contrasting the flesh versus the Spirit here, he makes his case a little stronger by telling us that not only do we have a choice to walk according to the flesh or the Spirit, we have a choice where we set our minds. The two are very similar because they both involve our focus.

When we get stuck focusing on the flesh, it seems to be a bit more than just walking along and getting irritated and wanting to retaliate. It seems to be more like a lifestyle. Some people might call setting our minds on the flesh “having a negative mindset,” or “stirring garbage,” or “worrying.”

Setting our minds on the Spirit can be a lifestyle, too. It does not mean that we only read our Bibles and pray, but rather that we keep turning to Jesus when the negatives, fears, doubts, and worries enter our minds. The more we think on good things when circumstances are normal, the easier it will be to remember them when negatives arise.

Application:

Think on these truths throughout the day when circumstances are normal and not intense, so that when difficulties come, you will be more likely to remember the truth.
