Be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18
Fill Me Up!
What kinds of things can you “fill up”? Let’s think about it. You can fill up your cup with milk, you can fill up your car with gas, and you can fill up your stomach with your favorite ice cream! Think of a few other things you can fill up.
In our verse for this week, God is telling us to fill ourselves up with His Holy Spirit. Before we talk about how to do that, who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the One Jesus promised to send us when He went up in the clouds after He rose from the dead. The Holy Spirit is also called “the Comforter” or “the Helper.” The Holy Spirit is who comes to live inside your heart when you accept Him into your life. He is always with you and He speaks to you. Is the Holy Spirit actually God? Yes, He is!
So how can we be filled with the Spirit? Ephesians 5:18–21 tells us three ways.
1. Sing a song of praise to God.
What is your favorite song of worship? When you sing that song, do you think about the words and what they mean to you? God says that the first way to fill yourself up with Him is to worship Him in song. When you are singing a song of praise to God, you are thinking about Him and you are focused on how great He is. This makes His Spirit happy and fills you up!
2. Give thanks.
Another way to be filled is to give thanks to God. Think about all the things He has done for you. Think about all the things He has given you. Thank Him for loving you, for choosing you to be His child, and for dying for you. Thank Him for your family, your friends, and all that you have.
3. Put others in front of yourself.
This passage tells us that if we want to be filled with the Spirit, we need to submit ourselves to one another. This means that you need to think about other people and do things for them, not just think of what you want for yourself all the time.
Sing a song of praise tonight with your family. Then make a list of all of the things for which you are thankful.
Dear Father, I want to be filled with Your Spirit! Please hear my song of praise and my prayers to You, and fill me up. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.
This week, as you learn this verse, can you do those three things? Can you let this truth work through you? After all . . .
God’s Word is for me and to me, it is in me and working through me, and just like His love, it goes on and on forever!
