Third Day - Lead Us Back: Songs Of WorshipSample
Our Deliverer
Our Deliverer is coming
With salvation in His wings
Our Deliverer is coming
Here to set His people free
Our Deliverer
The theme of God as Deliverer is a common thread throughout scripture. The exiled Israelites in Egypt looked to the promise of being delivered from slavery, David in Psalm 70 wrote:
Come quickly to me O God,
You are my help and my deliverer,
O Lord do not delay.
Whilst a consistent hope towards the end of the Old Testament is that the Messiah will come to deliver His people. For those of us living after the advent and life of Christ on earth, our confident hope and expectation is that Jesus will return again in glory. Our deliverer has come once but He is coming again! The apostle Paul expresses it this way:
He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us. 2 Corinthians 1:10
Mac Powell, who wrote this song, says about it: 'I wanted to write a song that connects us with the saints of the past who faithfully waited for the Messiah to come, but also to recognize that we need to be delivered also, and that we wait expectantly for our deliverer, Jesus Christ, to come again.' There are some important factors to note about the deliverance that the Lord brings about.
Firstly, the Lord is doing something for us that we cannot do for ourselves. When we recognize that the Lord is our deliverer, we are simply acknowledging that we cannot save ourselves from the perilous situation and circumstances that we are in.
Secondly, we realize that only God can take us from a place of separation, broken heartedness, bondage, slavery, guilt, pain, suffering, and lead us to a place of intimacy, healing, wholeness, freedom, forgiveness, grace, love and mercy.
Quite simply our deliverer brings us from a place of ungodliness to a place of godliness! We look forward too, to the time when Jesus returns and all ungodliness will be banished, and Christ's kingdom will flourish in its completeness.
Use these lyrics as a prayer of thanksgiving and a prayer of hope and faith:
Every burden one day will be lifted
And every broken heart will be redeemed
The Lord Almighty is coming to our rescue
Salvation's waiting for all who believe.
