Two beasts, both given power by Satan, are described here. The first beast uses political power to resist God and the second uses false religion. These beasts can be seen throughout human history, but probably also refer to future leaders who will have incredible power prior to Jesus’ return.

We live in a troubled world with ongoing conflict, much of it justified on the basis of religion. These conflicts come and go, but we never reach the end of them, and they seem to get perpetually worse. These conflicts are evidence that humanity cannot solve its own problems. We not only need Jesus to solve our personal sin problems, but the world needs Him as well.
