UNCOMMEN: Bumper Sticker Theology

DAY 2 OF 5

Jesus Is My Co-Pilot

When I first saw this bumper sticker, I chuckled, but then I got this strange look on my face and said out loud…”for the love of goodness, switch seats!” Why in the world would anyone want Jesus to be their co-pilot instead of their pilot?

But the more you think of it, the more it makes sense based on our culture’s approach to faith and “religion.” Jesus, I want you close to me…wait not too close…maybe within earshot. We may say we want Jesus to be our Lord and Savior as long as he doesn’t start making us do things we don’t want to do.

In my head, I see the creative team looking at the first draft of this bumper sticker that said, “Jesus is my pilot.” Some have arms crossed, and some have the one scratching their chin or head. Some may be making a face a little closer to “a hard no.” Then someone says, we don’t want to be pushy…let’s make him a co-pilot.

When you ask Jesus into your life, He will not want the passenger seat. He wants the captain’s chair, and He will want to drive all the time. You can’t learn to be more like Christ by being in the lead. You’ve probably spent years in control of your own life only to find out that you could not save yourself. I would encourage you to read the full chapter of John 3, but John 3:25-30 focuses on John the Baptist exalting Christ Jesus, and verse 30 says, “He must become greater, I must become less.”

It’s when we fully accept the role of the servant to our Master (Jesus) that we understand that the more He is in control of our lives, the more glorifying our lives will be.

Check your bumper sticker…you may need to switch seats!

Uncommen Questions:

Who’s the pilot and who’s the co-pilot on your bumper sticker?

Do you try to lead, or do you understand that you need to be lead by the Spirit?

Uncommen Challenge:

I challenge you to examine your relationship with Jesus and define His role to you. Once you have stated that He is indeed the Lord of your life and the lead in your relationship, you may then begin to live a life that is indeed Christlike.

About this Plan

UNCOMMEN: Bumper Sticker Theology

There’s a bumper sticker for everything these days. Christian culture has some bumper stickers of their own. Are we living up to what we’re testifying to on our cars? We’ll use some popular phrases you may have heard before to consider our personal walk with Jesus.
