"Beyond The Plate"
A few years ago, David Ortiz played his final game for the Boston Red Sox. Recognized as one of the best-designated hitters of all time, his legendary career comprised twenty seasons, three World Series victories, and ten All-Star Games.
Although Ortiz is known for being one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Red Sox uniform, the respect he’s earned goes beyond the field. In 2005, the David Ortiz Children’s Fund was founded with the sole purpose of saving children with heart problems.
Ortiz once told ESPNDeportes.com, “I want to be remembered not as someone who just looked after himself, but as someone who tried to do his bit to make a difference. God has given me much more than I deserve and the most logical way of thanking Him is by acting as a channel to help save lives and bring joy to children and their families."
Looking back at the amazing performances of an athlete’s career is significant, but pointing to a player’s heart and service in people’s lives is even more meaningful.
We expect athletes to “give back” because of the amount of money they make and the platform they’re granted, but giving isn’t exclusive to them. We, too, must willingly share our time, talents, and treasures with others.
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to display a giving spirit with our service and money. If our heart’s desire is to obey Jesus, giving freely to others will be the result.
Today, let’s be encouraged by the impact players like David Ortiz has beyond the plate. Let’s do our part in giving and serving like Jesus. I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I admit to getting caught up in my own life and missing out on opportunities to serve others in need. Please give me a heart that desires to sacrifice my time, talent, and treasures for the benefit of others. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
