Lighting the Lamp
By Robert Morris
Have you ever walked across a dark room? Maybe you had to get up in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom or to the kitchen and, while you were walking, stubbed your toe? We’ve all done this at some point in our lives, and the reason is because we didn’t have a light to see where we were going, or in other words, a lamp for our feet. Likewise, we live in a dark world. Is it possible we’re stumbling spiritually because we’re not using our lamp? Is it possible we’re trying to make it through the world without using the light God gave us?
In Luke 11:34, Jesus says, “The lamp of the body is the eye.” What that means is light or darkness gets into our bodies through what we look at. When we encounter darkness in our world, it comes right in. It distracts us and blinds us from the truth. Fortunately, God gave us His Word to drive out all darkness. When we study the Word, the lamp shines in us and fills us with light. It provides us with wisdom and helps us not to stumble.
You might think you’ve been living in darkness for a long time. The Bible says in John 1:5, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” That means lighting a lamp will always drive out the darkness … no matter how much there is. When you read the Bible, study God’s Word and meditate on Scripture, His light will overcome the darkness lurking in your life.
Maybe things seem pretty good in your life right now. Maybe it doesn’t feel like you need to dive into the Word to get through your day. Let me tell you this—His Word doesn’t just drive out the darkness; it can keep you from it, too. We need to spend time letting the lamp light our paths every day. If there’s always light, we won’t have the chance to stumble. We’ll be able to walk in the light of God’s guidance.
Are there areas in your life where you need God’s Word to drive out darkness? Are you working in a dark environment that you need His light to shine in? Spend time in His Word, clothe yourself with it—the lamp will always overcome the darkness.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your Word drives out the darkness in my life and allows me to navigate through a dark world. I commit to meditating on Your Word and hiding it in my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Memory Verse
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
