Help To OvercomeSample
Hebrews 2:17-18 also reveals what happens when we experience an extended period of temptation. It says in verse 18, "For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted."
Jesus suffered while being tempted. In other words, the process of severe temptation can deeply affect the person in a strong, negative fashion.
The verb “being tempted” is in the passive, demonstrating that Jesus experienced the consequences of temptation to the point that suffered. He felt deep pain during His intense struggle with His temptations.
Not only does the Bible teach that Jesus suffered great temptations and is able to help those who are going through their own temptations, but Hebrews 4:15-16 gives us an amazing promise we can claim time after time to ensure we come through our temptations victoriously:
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:15-16
Not only does Jesus sympathize with our weaknesses and was tempted in all points yet without sin, but He wants to help us during our temptation so we won’t choose to sin. Just think about that! The very Son of God stands ready and more than willing to help—but you must come to Him and ask for His help!
Although God limits all your temptations and makes the way of escape without your prayers, yet if you don’t ask God to help you to avoid temptations, to grant you the gift of comfort, and come to your aid in a temptation, the Godhead will not act.
Deliverance requires your dependence and humility in asking the Godhead for their help.
How should any of us feel if we come while we are tempted? The Bible, once again, shocks us with the instruction that during the very process of being tempted, we are to “come boldly” to the throne of grace!
Our temptations are never sins, just the doorway into sin.
Never allow any fragment of guilt or shame when you are tempted, or you will never be emotionally released to receive the benefits that this passage offers.
Every member of the trinity is directly involved in working for your victory over temptations—deeply desiring your victory, standing by waiting to be invited, and always ready to come to your aid.
