Day 5: Remain Faithful

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4:2, "It is required of stewards that they be found faithful." Faithfulness was the mainstay of being a steward in Paul’s day; and—beyond a shadow of a doubt—it still is. 

A "steward" means a "trustee" or "servant." The word for "required" here could be translated "above everything." So Paul is saying, "Above everything, a servant must be found faithful." As the saying goes, "If you’re going to soar, then you must serve." 

My husband has a degree in Marriage and Family Counseling. His passion is the family, and helping people in their marriage/family matters. He always teaches that one of the greatest attributes of a strong marriage is faithfulness. 

But you know what? As important as faithfulness is in marriage, it is even more important in the Kingdom of God. 

As a matter of fact, the Bible teaches us that—above all else—God requires us to be His faithful people. Even David said in Psalms 12:1, "Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race." 

In this day and age, it is more important than ever that we are found to be faithful children of the Most High God. 

As you are faithful, you will find that God will be faithful to you. Psalm 18:25 declares, "To the faithful You show yourself faithful." He is a God of His Word, and you can trust Him to be everything that His Word declares Him to be.  

David, the warrior, was found to be a faithful servant of Saul. Because he was faithful over the household of Saul, the Lord sent him the people he (David) needed later. 

Many men came to David to become his servants. 

They became mighty men who would do anything for David—even going so far as "breaking through the Philistines' lines and drawing water from the wells near the gate of Bethlehem." David had simply stated how much he would love some of the water from the gate of Bethlehem. But, his men loved him so much that they went on a covert mission to get it for him. 

When the mighty men broke through the enemy's territory and carried that water back to David, "he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord" (2 Samuel 23:16). He refused the water because the men had risked their very lives to get it; the risk they took made it too precious for him to drink. 

The Lord sent David that kind of help because David was faithful!

Even while Saul was hotly pursuing David, trying to kill him for envy's sake, David remained loyal and steadfast in his faithfulness to Saul, "his King." Can you believe that? David remained faithful to a man who had rejected him, accused him, discarded him, and was trying to murder him!

Loyalty has become almost foreign in today's culture.

Solomon says, "A faithful man will abound with blessings" (Proverbs 28:20). "Abound" is defined, "to occur or exist in great quantities or numbers; to be rich or well supplied; to be filled." By this passage, we understand fully that, when we are found faithful, we will be rich, well supplied, and filled with God’s blessings in more ways than we can possibly imagine. 

Ephesians 3:20 says, "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us ...." When you prepare for great exploits, you can go ahead and expect the Ephesians 3:20 faithfulness of God.

In the Amplified version, this verse says, "Now to Him who is able to (carry out His purpose and) do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think (infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams), according to His power that is at work within us." When we are found faithful, there is a reward for our faithfulness. So, as the writer of Hebrews declares, "You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised" (Hebrews 10:36).
