Many of the Jewish Christians had started to question why Jesus Christ had not yet returned and if His Second Coming would even occur. Peter, in this passage, reassures them that even the prophets predicted that haters would come and mock believers questioning the return of God. Peter tells them that God is poised and ready to signal for judgment and destruction of the ungodly by fire. But, He will do it in His own time according to His own plans and purposes.
