Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of HopeSample
April 7
Introduction
Today’s reading focuses on integrity and the use of wealth. By means of a parable, Jesus tells of a rich man’s property manager who shrewdly reduces the amounts owed by the rich man’s debtors, thereby ensuring that he would be welcomed into their homes should he lose his position. Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for their love of money and for neglecting the poor, and he warns his listeners that one cannot serve both God and money.
Today’s Scripture: Luke 16:10 (GNT)
[Jesus said:] “Whoever is faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones; whoever is dishonest in small matters will be dishonest in large ones.”
Today’s Reading
Luke 16:1-18
Reflect
What are your thoughts about what the property manager did? Should he have been praised for being shrewd even though he was dishonest? Reread verses 8 and 9. Jesus contrasts “people of this world” (those who are opposed to God’s purposes) with “people who belong to the light” (followers of Jesus). While people sometimes get money by cheating others, money and possessions can also be used to make friends and serve others. Would you agree or disagree with that statement? What is the “true wealth” (verse 11) that Jesus speaks of? Why did the Pharisees make fun of Jesus (verse 14)? What was his response to them?
Pray
Lord Jesus, you are the source of true wealth which you have entrusted to all who believe in and follow you. You have promised that you will welcome us in the eternal home. Keep me faithful as I seek to serve you. Amen.
