DAY 65 OF 86

1SAMUEL 15:
In 1 Samuel, Jonathan saved the day! He and his faithful armor bearer kind of took a leaf out of Gideon's playbook and agreed on a sign that would show what God wanted them to do— although they didn't ask for confirmation like Gideon did. They took the adventure God set before them and won an amazing victory, and God worked with them by causing panic among the Philistines. After lapses and dithering at the beginning, Saul went on to be a great military leader. Note that Ahijah, the priest, is Eli's grandson.

PSALM 99:
As we open to Psalm 99 today, take off your sandals, because this ground is holy! Enjoy this psalm proclaiming God’s majesty and holiness.

ROMANS 5—6:4:
One thing that the letter to the Romans shows us is that God’s ways are always counter-intuitive for humans. One would think that if one is right with God and at peace with him, that everything would be smooth sailing from then on, with health, wealth, and prosperity. God shows his love for us by treating us as sons and heirs— meaning, He gives us problems and trials to cause us to grow and better reflect his glory. There is a wonderful side to Christ's dying for us and being resurrected: He lives now and is deeply involved in continuing to help us. At the end of the chapter, Paul draws important comparisons and contrasts between Adam and Christ.

In the paragraph above, some will have noticed that I didn’t say, ‘treating us as sons and daughters’. There is a treasure here that I don’t want current gender sensitivity to erase. There is a special legal status that is given to each believer regardless of gender. Watch for that to come up in Romans later!

Let’s pray.
How we rejoice to sing to you, our Lord and our King! By your own power and holy strength, You have won the victory. You announced your victory; You made your saving power known to the nations. You kept your promise to the people of Israel, showing your loyalty and constant love for them. Now all people everywhere have seen your victory, O God. So we delight to sing praises to you accompanied by every instrument. Give your Word to all nations, so that every ethnic group will praise You in their own languages. We give all this praise because you have provided the way in which we can have peace with You. Our Lord, Christ Jesus has won the victory, and we who believe in Him are put right with you. We who all previously had no hope of being worthy to share in your glory have been given amazing grace. That is something that we want to sing about today!
