Read To Me Daily Semester 2

DAY 10 OF 86

NUMBERS 36:
In our reading in the book of Numbers yesterday, we heard about the boundaries for the nation of Israel, the 12 clan leaders appointed by the Lord, and about cities set aside for the Levites and cities of refuge— to protect from unjust prosecution of murder. It is interesting that all the cities chosen to be cities of refuge were also cities where the Levites were located. There seems to have been a recognition that the Levites would become judges and teachers who would teach and uphold God’s Laws.

PSALM 48:
Today’s psalm, Psalm 48, praises God for Jerusalem. The Korahite writer regards Jerusalem as a reflection of God's glory. As we read this in this day, we see that more than the earthly Jerusalem is in view. God has prepared a city for us!

ACTS 7a:
Yesterday in Acts chapter 6, we heard how grumbling in the ever-expanding group of believers in Jerusalem required that seven helpers (the first deacons) be appointed. (The word ‘deacon’ comes directly from a verb in Greek that means ‘to serve’.) One of them, Stephen, became the object of controversy with the Greek-speaking Jews. Before the council, his face shone with a radiance like that of an angel. The false witnesses made two accusations against Stephen, and today we hear his defense against the first of them.

Let’s pray.
Our heavenly Father, You are awesome in holiness! You have allowed us to know you through our Savior Jesus Christ. So we clap our hands with great joy. With the psalmist we say, “Clap your hands for joy, all peoples. We who once were far away can now assemble and be included with the people of the God of Abraham. Being brought near by Christ, we praise You, our God, with loud songs. Let the trumpets sound and the people shout! You are king over all the world. But our Father, our land is polluted by murder. We are surrounded by corruption and injustice of all kinds. You, our God, are not praised and joyfully worshipped as you ought to be. What can we do? Lord, like the seven men chosen in Acts, please fill us with the Holy Spirit and wisdom.
