Devotions On Jesus By Charles Spurgeon

DAY 2 OF 4

"No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man." - John 3:13

How frequently did Jesus refer to Himself as the “Son of Man.” With all of the great names available to Him for His choosing – names such as Son of God, the Everlasting Father, Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace – He chose the humble name known as the Son of Man. Behold, the grace and lowliness of Jesus. He prefers to call Himself the Son of Man.

We should all learn a lesson of humility from Jesus. Let us follow His example and refuse to go after great-sounding titles or even after proud degrees. There is something far sweeter for each of us to pursue. We see it in Jesus. Love. He loved us so much that He delighted to honor us by being identified with us. And since He chose to honor us by calling Himself one of us, let us bask in that honor ourselves.

The greatest dignity we have ever known in all of humanity is that of Jesus calling Himself the Son of Man. He hung royal stars upon our necks as He showed us the ultimate love, the love of God Himself to the seed of Abraham.

Yet, there is perhaps a more precious thought still. Jesus Christ called Himself the Son of Man in order to express His oneness with us. And because of that, He reminds us that He is the One whom we can approach without fear. As a man, we may take to Him all of our cares, issues and troubles because He knows them all through experience. In that He Himself has known suffering as the Son of Man, He is able to comfort us. Bless His name, Jesus – the Son of Man.

In as much as You are using this sweet name over and over again, You are acknowledging that You are our brother and a near kinsman. It is to us a precious token of Your grace, humility and Your love.
