DAY 16 OF 18

Word of the Day: Rise

Definition: To end a session; to appear above the horizon; move upward; to attain a higher level or rank (Merriam-Webster, 2015).

The word “rise” is very inspirational because it is literal and symbolic. Rising is literal in the sense that when you see something or someone getting up, you know that they are getting up – you can see it. It is symbolic because rising can represent an ending and beginning to something. For example, it can convey how someone is choosing to rise out of a sin that kept them bound. Rising can represent deliverance.

Sometimes, the effects of life do a great job at beating us down so far that hope becomes bleak. However, is it empowering to know that we have the ability to propel ourselves out of anything that weighs us down. But sin is also something that can keep us down. In the 10th chapter of the book of Ezra, it addresses the Jews’ sin of marriage to non-Jews. In those days, that was an unclean thing to do. Ezra cried out to God on behalf of the people and they heard him and realized their sins. After the realization set in, they made an agreement to stop what they were doing and rise above the offenses towards God.

Action: Get a piece of paper and write down an acronym for the word: rise. For example:

I will R.I.S.E.:

R- radiate

I-increase

S-soar

E-elevate

The next time you are facing a challenge, or if you notice that you are stuck in a situation, read this as a reminder.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for bringing to my attention that I have the power to rise; whether it be from affliction, sin, unforgiveness, toxic relationships, jealousy or whatever else it may be that displeases You and oppresses my growth as a Christian. I am so grateful for the assurance that You are there to help me rise from the ashes and by faith in the name of Jesus, I will rise. Please be my Guide as I endeavor to continue on my journey with You. All these things we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Affirmation: When I fall, I will rise up, confess it, repent and keep moving forward.
