How To Pray More Effectively

DAY 4 OF 4

Plan Prayer

Prayer is something you have to make time for in your life. Planning prayer is a way to help you pray more effectively. Praying has to do with the mindset and attitude of the heart. It is like breathing.

Pray daily, but plan for this as well. I would suggest early in the morning, but prayer could also be the last thing you do each day before you go to bed. Lay upon your bed and think about the Word of God. Lift your heart to God in light of those things. There are times that I'm sitting in traffic and I'm praying. The cars next to me probably think I'm crazy, talking to myself, but I'm actually praying. If you commute to work, that's also a great time to talk to God.

You can plan days to pray specifically for your family. Instead of praying for them in a general way, you can pick one day for each family member. In the same sort of way, you can devote your prayer time to missions, or to the church. You could have a chalkboard in your house and write down who you're praying for on each day. Your household can get involved and participate in prayer with you for others. Think of ways you can organize your prayer life to make it more effective. Like anything else, if you don't think about it much then you're not going to be very effective at it.

Martin Lloyd-Jones said, "The first matter of prayer is to remember that you're praying." You are talking to God. You're not just rehearsing what's on your mind. Pay attention to meaningless repetition. Rid yourself of that. It's unfortunate that often, prayers have become clichés. You don't have to start your prayer the same way every time. Prayer is personal. Observe which prayers you're genuinely saying and repeating from your heart to God, and the ones that you have just gotten used to saying.

Relaxing and talking to God, praying Scripture when you have no words to express fully, and planning out your prayers are ways that can help you pray more effectively. 1st John says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, he hears us." God hears you. Through your prayers, He will provide a sense of comfort, confidence, and joy.
