 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">Solomon Asks for Wisdom</div><div class="p"> 1Solomon son of David established himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.</div><div class="p"> 2Then Solomon spoke to all Israel&#8212;to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families&#8212; 3and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon, for God&#8217;s tent of meeting was there, which Moses the Lord&#8217;s servant had made in the wilderness. 4Now David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem. 5But the bronze altar that Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired of him there. 6Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.</div><div class="p"> 7That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, &#8220;Ask for whatever you want me to give you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Solomon answered God, &#8220;You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. 9Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11God said to Solomon, &#8220;Since this is your heart&#8217;s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.</div><div class="p"> 14Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,#1:14 Or charioteers which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16Solomon&#8217;s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue#1:16 Probably Cilicia&#8212;the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels#1:17 That is, about 15 pounds or about 6.9 kilograms of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.#1:17 That is, about 3 3/4 pounds or about 1.7 kilograms They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.</div>

 <div class="q1">1Like snow in summer or rain in harvest,</div><div class="q2">honor is not fitting for a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 2Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,</div><div class="q2">an undeserved curse does not come to rest.</div><div class="q1"> 3A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,</div><div class="q2">and a rod for the backs of fools!</div><div class="q1"> 4Do not answer a fool according to his folly,</div><div class="q2">or you yourself will be just like him.</div><div class="q1"> 5Answer a fool according to his folly,</div><div class="q2">or he will be wise in his own eyes.</div><div class="q1"> 6Sending a message by the hands of a fool</div><div class="q2">is like cutting off one&#8217;s feet or drinking poison.</div><div class="q1"> 7Like the useless legs of one who is lame</div><div class="q2">is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 8Like tying a stone in a sling</div><div class="q2">is the giving of honor to a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 9Like a thornbush in a drunkard&#8217;s hand</div><div class="q2">is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.</div><div class="q1"> 10Like an archer who wounds at random</div><div class="q2">is one who hires a fool or any passer-by.</div><div class="q1"> 11As a dog returns to its vomit,</div><div class="q2">so fools repeat their folly.</div><div class="q1"> 12Do you see a person wise in their own eyes?</div><div class="q2">There is more hope for a fool than for them.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 13A sluggard says, &#8220;There&#8217;s a lion in the road,</div><div class="q2">a fierce lion roaming the streets!&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 14As a door turns on its hinges,</div><div class="q2">so a sluggard turns on his bed.</div><div class="q1"> 15A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;</div><div class="q2">he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.</div><div class="q1"> 16A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes</div><div class="q2">than seven people who answer discreetly.</div>

They come to you in sheep&#8217;s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.</div><div class="s1">True and False Disciples</div><div class="p"> 21 &#8220;Not everyone who says to me, &#8216;Lord, Lord,&#8217; will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, &#8216;Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?&#8217; 23Then I will tell them plainly, &#8216;I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!&#8217;</div><div class="s1">The Wise and Foolish Builders</div><div class="p"> 24 &#8220;Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.</div>
