16 # For ver. 16-30, [Matt. 13:54-58; Mark 6:1-6] And he came to #ch. 2:39, 51 Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And #[Acts 17:2] as was his custom, #ver. 31; See Mark 6:2 he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up #Acts 13:15, 27; 15:21to read. 17And #ch. 3:4; [Acts 8:28]the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

because he has anointed me

20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and #Matt. 26:55; [John 8:2]; [Matt. 5:1; 13:2] sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were #Acts 3:4; [ch. 19:48]fixed on him. 21And he began to say to them, “Today #Mark 12:10; Acts 8:35 this Scripture #See Matt. 1:22has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22And all spoke well of him and marveled at #Ps. 45:2 the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, #[Matt. 13:55; John 6:42] “Is not this #ch. 3:23Joseph’s son?” 23And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, #[ch. 23:39; Matt. 27:42] ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did #Matt. 11:23; Mark 2:1-12; John 4:46-53at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” 24And he said, “Truly, I say to you, #See Matt. 13:57no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when #1 Kgs. 17:1; 18:1; James 5:17; [Rev. 11:6]the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26and Elijah was sent to none of them #1 Kgs. 17:9but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And #[2 Kgs. 7:3] there were many lepers#4:27 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13 in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, #2 Kgs. 5:1-14but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29And they rose up and #[Num. 15:35; Acts 7:58]drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30But #John 8:59; 10:39passing through their midst, he went away.

31 # For ver. 31-37, see Mark 1:21-28 And he #Matt. 4:13 went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. Have you come to destroy us? #[Acts 19:15; James 2:19] I know who you are—#John 6:69; Acts 3:14; Rev. 3:7; [ch. 1:35; Heb. 7:26; 1 John 2:20]the Holy One of God.” 35But Jesus #ver. 41; See Matt. 12:16rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36And #ver. 32; [Matt. 8:27]they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? #ver. 32; [Matt. 8:27]For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37And #ver. 14reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
