Aware of Others' Needs

As a mom of three, I know how easy it is to focus solely on what is happening in my home. Nehemiah reminds us to be aware of others' needs. When speaking with his brother, he first asks about the remnant in Jerusalem. Nehemiah is so concerned that he prays and weeps for his people and the city. Prayer isn't a cliche; prayer is a powerful tool and a precious gift. It delivers our needs to the attention of the one who has the power to work in our situation.

In my most challenging seasons, praying and caring for others is the best medicine. It takes the focus off me and reminds me that God is over it all. God calls each of us to help when we are able. I’m reminded of the paralytic's friends who brought him to Jesus. For us, it could mean preparing a meal, visiting the sick, or just sitting and listening to a hurting friend.

Let's be believers who aware of others' needs and begin by praying for them.

Prayer: Father, go before me, give me eyes to see those you want me to see, ears to listen to those who need a friend, and if I should speak, let my words point to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Nehemiah: God's Invitation to Rebuild

In this 21-day reading plan, we’ll look to Nehemiah as a role model in prayer, obedience, perseverance, and, yes, leadership.
