Light and DarknessΔείγμα
God Himself is light
The Bible tells us a lot about God. He is eternal. He is almighty. He is holy. He is unchangeable. These are all characteristics of His deity, that distinguish God from us mortal humans. But the Bible also teaches us a lot about God’s character. He is good. He is love. He is merciful. He is slow to wrath. He is faultless. Another way to express this same truth, is found in 1 John 1:5: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”. God is so ultimately and completely good, that there is not a tiny bit of evil in Him.
Knowing God’s character is extremely comforting. Consider what life would be like if God was eternal and almighty, but not good! Many idols are like that; they are believed to be powerful but also unpredictable or selfish. That makes people anxious. But the real God has nothing to do with evil and darkness. He is pure light.
This is good news. But it does bring up a problem, since we humans are not completely good. We do have specks of darkness in us! And since light can’t have fellowship with darkness (see 2 Corinthians 6:14), God’s light is “unapproachable” for us. So how can we have a relationship with God, if our sinfulness separates us from Him? Do read with us in the days to come to find out...

Immediately in the first chapter of the Bible, we read how God created light. And further on in the Bible, light is often used as a metaphor for God’s domain as opposed to the domain of sin and death. Jesus even calls Himself “the Light of the world”. Light and darkness thus have an important place in the Bible. This reading plan presents a selection of verses about this topic.
