How To Be A Christian At Your Work – Part 2 Of 2

ΗΜΕΡΑ 3 ΑΠΟ 6

Following our guide word “BLESS,” we started with prayer and then looked to see how God was answering that prayer with opportunities for us to BLESS others.

Today, we look at the letter “E”, which reminds us to be “Exercise obedience” to the call of God, even at our work.

This is where it could get scary.

After all, if God shows you the opportunities that you’re praying for, then you really do need to follow through, don’t you? Otherwise, you’re being disobedient, right?

Ouch!

Being a Christian isn’t always easy…

Stepping out in obedience – even at work – is what true Christ-followers are called to do. It is not enough to be obedient in the “safe” places of church, family, or your small group.

Remember, Jesus spent more time in public (his “workplace”) where people needed him most, not isolated in the synagogue.

Your workplace is also where the action is.  It is YOUR mission field.

Jesus chose 12 ordinary men with no special prior training as his disciples. In the same way, God has chosen you. You are part of His plan to BLESS others at your workplace.

There’s no getting around it.

Financial sacrifice to the church or time spent in church activities is important, but not your primary mission field. Do not allow these to distract you from the call to obedience in being used to BLESS others at your workplace.

Not sure about that? Then check the story of the downfall of King Saul in 1 Samuel 15:17-26 to see that obedience is better than sacrifice.

So, when God has prepared a good work for you to do at the workplace and has revealed it to you, it is then your responsibility to obey and follow through.

Remember, it is God who placed you at your work to serve as His hands and feet and BLESS those you work with. Not your pastor, missionary or small group leader – they aren’t at your work and likely couldn’t come there even if they wanted to.

God has chosen YOU to be the person to BLESS others at your work, and He won’t let you down when you seek to glorify Him in that way.

Working to BLESS others will not always be easy – especially in the face of opposition. In these cases, check the words of Peter, who himself faced plenty of difficult situations:

Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (1 Peter 3:9, NIV)

There’s no better mission field for you than the workplace you are. A summer mission trip to a far-away land might be less threatening, but it is not your primary calling.

Can you “Exercise obedience” to the call BLESS others at your work?

PRAYER

Lord, honestly, I admit that I may not always want to see the opportunities that you have called me to do.  But, in my heart of hearts, I want to serve and honor you with my life. Help me to obey and do your will, even today. Thank you and Amen.

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT

Are you ready to exercise obedience for Him today?

Can you recall an example where you stepped out of your comfort zone to BLESS someone at your work? How did that go?

If you don’t have a group of Christians that you meet for regular encouragement and sharing of how to BLESS others, then take action to find one today.
