Introduction

Psalm 22: Today’s reading is a psalm that expresses both suffering and praise. The opening questions and complaints are balanced at the end by expressions of trust, confidence, and praise.

Today’s Key Verse: Psalm 22:28

The LORD is king; and he rules the nations.

Reflect

Today’s reading is a psalm that is often read in many churches on Good Friday, the day that marks the crucifixion of Christ. Jesus quotes the first words of this psalm as he hangs the cross (see Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34). Expressing a feeling of abandonment by God is common in prayers for help (see Psalm 13:1–2). What other verses in this psalm bring to mind Jesus’s suffering on the cross? How does the first part of the psalm (verses 1–21) differ from the second part (verses 22–31)? Does reading the ending of this psalm help you see the crucifixion in a new way? Is it hard to praise God in the midst of suffering? Why or why not?

Pray

Lord God, when I cry to you for help, I trust that you hear me and that you are near. Whenever I may feel that you have abandoned me, remind me of your steadfast presence and your love. Amen.

Tomorrow’s Reading
