God and Me: Devotions from Time of Grace

God and My Enemies

Believers have to endure and overcome threats of various kinds. King David faced deadly violence for decades, first from wild animals, then from murderous King Saul, and then in all the military campaigns that he led. He left behind eloquent and passionate psalms that prayed both for his deliverance and for God to get rid of all who opposed his divine will.

Here are words when you fear for your life: "He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me" (Psalm 18:16,17).

Philistines and Amalekites no longer pose much of a threat to you. So who are "enemies" today? If you are a police officer, you may face deadly peril every time you clip on your badge and step onto the street. If you wear the uniform of our country, you become a target for all who hate America.

All of God's children do well to remember that the deadliest enemies of all come from hell. Satan and his demons would like to rip you apart, body and soul. Without divine and angelic protection, we would be shredded.

Lord Jesus, protect me this night from every evil power and watch over all who belong to you.
