Don’t Waste Your Resources

Leadership Lesson

God is not happy when his resources are squandered.

Read Matthew 25:24–27.

Comment

This part of the parable is a warning. The servant with one bag of gold is reprimanded (and eventually kicked out of the kingdom) for not using his resources. You might feel sorry for him because, after all, he was only given one bag. But a bag of gold sounds like a great gift to me. In his grace, God gives everyone an opportunity to contribute to his kingdom. The servant was full of excuses, but the master nailed his problem. He was “lazy” (24:26). He couldn’t be bothered doing anything with what he had been generously given. He thought that it didn’t matter. But, of course, it does. It’s absolutely vital that every Christian use the gifts and abilities they have been given by God. I have been a Christian leader for 55 years, but making a contribution to God’s kingdom is still important to me. I need to contribute as God gives me the opportunity because that is what God expects of all his “servants.” Remember that while it is ultimately God’s responsibility to produce the Crop, as a Jesus-style leader, you have a significant contribution to make. Give it your best shot because, as the lazy servant found, this is a big issue for Jesus.

Prayer

Lord, I’m still figuring out what my gifts are and how I can make the strongest contribution to your kingdom. I know you are patient with me, and there is plenty of time for me to grow, lead, and make a difference. But I want you to know that I’m not going to be slack or lazy. I’m giving this my best shot. Please use me, Lord.

Personal Reflection

Don’t be too hard on yourself, but honestly answer the question, “Am I giving it my best shot with the gifts God has given me?” Listen to what God is saying to you.
