Letting God Be Enough: Why Striving Keeps You Stuck & How Surrender Sets You Free

DAG 4 AF 5

Moses recounts to God what happened the last time he tried to convince the people of Israel that he was supposed to deliver them. They rejected him. Moses fears the people will not accept him as the chosen deliverer sent by God this time also. He is certain they will question both his calling and his capabilities. God forces Moses to face his fear head-on as He performs the miracle of turning the staff into a snake. Moses’ reaction was to run from it.

God told Moses to turn around and squash the fear in his fist. Grab the snake! Through this sign, God told Moses that not only could he face his fear, but he could also conquer and subdue it. God did not turn the serpent back into a staff while Moses stood at a distance and watched. To conquer our fear and see God’s power over it, we have to face it. Running away only makes us more fearful.

Moses’ default in fear is to flee. He prefers to defer rather than step into his assignment, suggesting to God that He find someone else more fit for the role God offers. To move past our fear of inadequacy, we have to turn around and face our fear. Sometimes we’ll start striving in another direction in hopes of moving further away from the problem, but God wants us to surrender the fear over to Him, allowing Him to deal with it. God shows Moses that He is intent on helping him overcome with courage rather than flee in fright.

Question:

What types of circumstances cause you to flee because you prefer not to deal with them?

Personal Prayer:

Dear Jesus, give me the courage to step forward in faith and follow you in obedience.

No matter how good we look to others, the nagging voice of self-doubt is hard to shake. We wonder: If people really knew me would they still accept me? Will I be rejected when I can't perform? What if I end up alone? If you find yourself having thoughts like these, join Erica Wiggenhorn for 5 days in the story of Moses and find what happens when we surrender.
