Malachi: A Frank Conversation with God
The back-and-forth conversations from this last book of the Old Testament confirm the consistency of the entire story of God's character, humankind's depravity, and the people's failure to keep the life-giving covenant that God had offered.
Consider God's attitude towards the various groups He converses with in this book. Those who have chosen to walk in obedience rejoice in God's proclamation of a future messenger, blessings for obedience, and assurance that He will bring justice to the earth. Those who harden their hearts and reject the covenantal promises will receive the just consequences of their own free will choices: poverty of soul and body.
Pay attention also to the promises about the future of those who revere God's name. They will receive healing, provision, and softened hearts that will lead them to deeper fellowship with God.
Question: What type of conversations do you have with God? Do you come into His presence with a soft heart or a heart of complaint?
Prayer: Examine your heart. If it is filled with complaining and mistrust, repent and seek God's grace to change how you think and respond to your circumstances and God. If you find your heart rejoicing, even though your days may be difficult, lift up your heart and pay attention to the peace you walk in and the joy of His presence.
